Interview from Louise Younie for Mental Health Awareness week

Interview: Supporting Student Wellbeing Through Creative Enquiry

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, Queen Mary University of London featured an interview with Louise Younie exploring how creative enquiry can support medical students’ wellbeing and help them flourish throughout their studies.

In the conversation, Louise reflects on how creative enquiry provides space for students to express themselves, connect with one another, and explore the human dimensions of medicine. Through artistic and reflective practice, students are invited to make meaning of their experiences, develop empathy, and build resilience. These are key foundations for sustaining wellbeing in clinical training and beyond.

As Louise explains:

“Creative enquiry offers a way to pause and reconnect with meaning; it helps students see the person behind the patient, and also recognise themselves as whole human beings within the process of learning medicine.”

She also highlights the importance of creating flourishing spaces within medical education, which are environments that nurture connection, creativity, and compassion alongside academic and professional growth.
